Frustration Game

The definition of “frustration” is a feeling of exasperation caused by goals being thwarted, and this Frustration Game can certainly be a source of exasperation when the cards just aren’t turning up with what the player needs.  This is a great card game that can be played with two, three, four, or more people and the players can have a lot of fun in building their hands and winning the levels.

Terms and the Various Levels

There are ten levels to achieve for the players to progress to the next level with each level consisting of a specific number of runs or sets.  A run is a sequential order of any cards from the ace to the king, and the suits can be mixed in the run.  A set is two cards of the same value, such as two queens of any suit, or two sixes of any suit.  The “two” cards are considered wild and can be used to finish a run or to complete a set.

The levels are:

Level 1 is completed with a run of seven sequential cards.
Level 2 consists of two sets of three cards, such as three fives and three nines.
Level 3 is made up of a set of three cards plus four sequential cards.
Level 4 is made up of a set of four cards, plus four sequential cards.
Level 5 consists of eight cards that are in sequence.
Level 6 consists of a set of five cards and a set of two cards that match
Level 7 consists of two complete sets of four cards
Level 8 is made up of nine sequential cards
Level 9 is made up of a set of five cards plus a run of six cards in sequence.
Level 10 is made up of a set of five plus a set of four

To Begin the Game

To start with, first decide on the number of players that are participating because that determines the number of decks of cards to use.  For two to four players, two decks of cards are generally appropriate, but if more than four are playing then three decks are needed.  Each player is dealt 11 cards with the remaining card put face down in the middle of the table.  The top card on the deck is flipped over and placed next to the deck and becomes the discard stack.

The players play counterclockwise of the dealer (to the left); each player can pick up the card that is on the discard pile, or they can throw away a card out of their deck and draw the top card in the deck.  There are 10 levels to the game and each level has a different objective for the players to achieve.  When the player has completed a level, their cards are laid down in front of them.

Scoring and Winning

All the cards are counted with those numbered three through nine getting 5 points, ten through king getting 10, and Ace and two getting 20 – the  player who has the lowest score wins.
